California-born Bosscat purrs with comfort fare, whiskey near River Oaks

Exposed brick and reclaimed wood dominate, broken up by metal chairs and bar stools, banquettes of tufted black leather, stained concrete floors and antiqued dining hall lamps.

The clubby Whiskey Room houses a stash of more than 300 whiskey, bourbon and scotch selections along with 40 private lockers.

Shareable appetizers include pork belly poutine, bourbon chicken flatbread, cornbread Madeleines, crispy buttermilk fried frog’s legs, pimento cheese and “pig candy” (pork lacquered with rye whiskey caramel).

Larger plates: the Bosscat Burger with house-ground beef, bacon and black garlic sauce; a deep-fried black-eyed pea fritter sandwich; Gulf shrimp and grits; 12-hour braised beef short rib with potato gratin; and the all-day Barrel Aged Breakfast featuring a skillet pancake topped with a duck-fat-fried egg, bacon and whiskey maple syrup.
