‘Killer’ revives cereal-as-dessert idea

Jen Lee, who worked at Pinterest before launching a dessert business using rice cereal, said the idea for her venture stemmed from college life.

“The idea originated when I was in college and wanted to make dessert for people with simple ingredients such as cereals using a microwave in my dorm room,” Lee says.

The beauty in this recipe is that you can use other cereals, and you can even make it vegan or gluten-free by choosing the right cereal base.

Move over, burger! Patty melt is here

There’s something exceptionally awesome about the combination of a smashed beef patty, bechamel sauce, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and spicy mustard on griddled bread.

To balance the richness of the meat – not to say anything of the bechamel, grated cheese and caramelized onions that further gild the lily – slather some spicy mustard on two slices of buttered bread.

5 tablespoons unsalted butter

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

¾ cup grated cheddar cheese

When the butter has melted add the onions, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and a deep golden brown, 30-45 minutes.

Make the sandwiches by buttering one side of each of the slices of bread and placing them on a rimmed baking sheet, buttered side-down.

When hot, place the baking sheet holding the bread slices under the broiler, 3 inches from the heating element, and broil until the cheese melts, about 3 minutes.
